OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE - Page 4

Swimming Pools

Many individuals have swimming pools (either above ground or in-ground pools) that need to be maintained.  There are many types of pools and filter systems, but for most pools the time and cost of performing proper maintenance can be minimized, and still have sparkling water to enjoy.

1.     Doing your own pool maintenance is a great way to save $50-$100 per month with relatively little effort.  Many people do more than is necessary to maintain their pool.  If you have a chance to watch a pool service company conduct their weekly pool maintenance, you will find that it generally only takes them 15-30 minutes a week of effort. So find a level of effort that keeps your pool clean and gradually reduce your effort until you reach a point that conditions begin to deteriorate.  At that point you will have found the approximate level of maintenance required.  Do the reverse if you have a pool with poor conditions.  Keep in mind, that the level of effort will change during the course of the year as pool water gets warmer and colder.  The colder the water the less effort generally required.

2.     The temperature of your water, and how much your pool is used, also impacts how long you need to run your filter.  During colder seasons, or periods of less use, you can cut back filtering time considerably.  Perhaps even to as little as 1-2 hours.  Try to lessen your filter time at different times of the year until it starts having a negative impact and then adjust.

3.     Water temperature, how much the pool is used, the amount of dirt and debris that gets in the pool, and the type of filter also impacts how often the filter needs to be cleaned.  Adjust your filter cleaning schedule accordingly to reduce effort.  Try not cleaning the filter as often and see what happens.  You may be cleaning it more than is necessary.

4.     Pools which use salt sanitizing systems, rather than the addition of chlorine, can also save money, as well as making for a more pleasant pool experience.  Since these systems do not use chlorine there is no chlorine smell or cost.  Bathing suits also do not fade from chlorine.  These systems also appear to keep pool water clearer with less effort and cost.  Once installed, these systems require very little upkeep, and no additional pool chemicals to sanitize your pool water.  They can be installed on new pools or retrofitted easily to existing pools.  Cost is about $1,500.  Look up salt pool systems on the Internet, or inquire with a pool company to learn about the benefits and cost.

5.     Installation of a pool cover can reduce maintenance efforts and cost by reducing the amount of dirt and debris that enters the pool.  They also have the added benefit of retaining heat in a pool and will lessen pool heating costs.  However, if you like to look at the water in your pool, a cover may not be for you.

6.     If you are considering installing a new in-ground pool, installation of an in-ground pool cleaning system should be considered.  Depending on the size of the pool, the cost is around $2,000-$3,000.  But they will keep the bottom of your pool almost totally clean without any effort on your part, or the need for a pool maintenance company to sweep your pool.  They will also free your pool up from the crawlers that many people use to clean their pool bottom.
