Extra Hotel Charges (continued)
10. Many hotels provide several “freebies” to attract your business and make your
stay more pleasant. In fact, sometimes these freebies will cause you to book one
hotel versus another. In any case, the freebies are there for your use, so do not
be shy about using them. Often they include a coffee maker and free coffee in your
room, use of an in-
11. If you run into any problems at the hotel, make sure to tell the front desk, or if they are serious problems, the manager. Most hotels want to please their guests and will try to correct the problem. Many hotels will also give partial or full refunds if your stay is unsatisfactory.
Hotels and motels are not the only accommodations available for travel, and often
alternative accommodations are both nicer and less expensive. This is particularly
true if you are planning a stay of one week or more, or are traveling with a family.
And many of these lodging alternatives have kitchen facilities and leisure facilities
that offer more variety than a hotel, and can save you money on dining and entertainment.
Many of these facilities can be found at the travel web sites, particularly those
that specialize in non-
1. If you are traveling with four or more people in your party, consider renting a hotel suite with more than one bedroom, rather than two separate rooms. Sometimes suites cost less than two or more separate rooms, depending on supply and demand.
2. If you have a large party, or just like more room, renting a townhouse, condo or vacation home can be the most economical way to go, not to mention being more comfortable and flexible than hotel rooms.
3. Timeshares may also be available for rent, even if you do not belong to a timeshare club. Many time shares are at resort type communities and offer all the amenities necessary for a vacation or extended stay.
4. Some individuals also end up paying nothing by house swapping. This is where
you stay in someone else’s home at your desired location, and someone else stays
at your home. This is not for everyone, but the savings are considerable. Home-
5. Renting a room or rooms at a bed and breakfast can also be fun, and the savings on food can be nice, particularly if you like a big breakfast.
6. And there is always the adventuresome approach of renting an RV or camper and staying at campsites. Often state and national parks will also have cabins for rent.
Planning your vacation and purchasing the necessary transportation, lodging and food on an “ala carte” basis is the most common way to travel. However, if you are planning on traveling to and staying at your destination for a period of time, or maybe touring a certain area, vacation packages may be an easier way to plan your travel and, perhaps, save a significant amount of money. The types of vacation packages and the destinations available are quite varied, as is the pricing. Special deals on all sorts of vacation packages are generally available. And, sometimes, adding extra nights to the package is very inexpensive. For this type of travel your local travel agent can be of great assistance in helping find the right vacation package for you.
1. Try to get a general idea of what you would like to do, how long a trip you would like and your approximate budget. Some packages will include almost everything you will need: all transportation, accommodations, food and drink, entrance fees, etc. Other packages will be less inclusive, which will leave your overall cost less defined, but perhaps provide more flexibility.
2. If you are relatively unfamiliar with travel and vacation packages, visit a few local travel agents to discuss your thoughts with them, and to see what packages they have available. You will probably find that there will be a lot of duplication between travel agents with what they have to offer, but they will each have some packages not found elsewhere, and prices will vary somewhat. When getting pricing from the travel agent, make sure all fees and costs are included for the packages you are considering.
3. Once you know what the travel agents have to offer in the way of packages, you may want to check other sources. Often, credit card companies, associations and travel clubs like Costco Travel Club will offer attractive packages. Airlines, and hotels/resorts also offer packages. And, of course, most of the major travel web sites (like Expedia.com, etc.) offer packages. There are also numerous other web sites that offer about any type of package you could want. Travel industry shows that often come to larger towns also will generally offer some exceptional travel packages. It is just a matter of looking until you find the package that is right for you.
