Visiting Disney World & Theme Parks (continued)

change, the price and availability of hotel rooms fluctuates greatly.  So, if you can, be sure to visit in the off season to save a great deal of money, and enjoy a less crowded park.  For Disney World, October and May seem to be the most affordable.

b.  Disney World also has a special marketing campaign called “Walt Disney World’s Wonderful Weeks of Disney” targeted to visitors who can visit during off-peak times. Rooms are generally less expensive.  Check with the Disney web site.

c.  Theme parks, like Disney World, have hotel accommodations inside the park. These are generally fairly expensive, given the nature of the room, although some rooms are “reasonably” priced.  In addition to the “wow” factor, staying inside the park generally has two advantages.  During the day, if you need to go back to the room, particularly with smaller children, it is much easier to do if you are staying in the park.  Also, most of the time, staying in the park provides free parking, which can be a considerable saving.  In addition to staying onsite, Disney World also offers several independent hotels that provide some of the benefits of the in-park hotels, like early and late access to the parks, discounted admission, etc.  These hotels are located on Hotel Plaza Boulevard and Lake Buena Vista Boulevard.

d.  However, staying outside the park can result in very large savings and a much nicer room, especially during the off season.  Virtually all of the hotels around theme parks run specials.  Some planning ahead, and diligent use of the Internet, should allow you to uncover some great bargains.  Keep in mind, if you are going to the Orlando area and are visiting Disney World as well as Universal Studios, you will probably find better hotel deals in the Disney area.  Most hotels in the greater Orlando area will offer shuttle service to both Disney World and the other major theme parks.  But make sure you check.

e.  More extensive travel packages to theme parks are also available, which can include air fare, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, admissions and even some meals.  These packages are available from several sources, including the theme parks themselves, and most all travel sites and travel agencies.  If what they provide is a good match for the services you want, they may be a great deal, saving you a considerable amount of money.  But make sure you are not paying for a lot of features that you really do not want.

3.     Eating during a trip to a theme park can get very expensive.  In addition to the tips mentioned above under the “Dining Economically When Traveling” heading, here are some tips for saving money on food during a trip to Disney World.

a.  While not well known, if you have booked a theme park package at Disney World, they offer a “”Dining Plan” that offers considerable savings.  You receive a table service meal, a quick service meal and a snack each day for each person, at a discount of up to 40%.  Check the Disney web site.

b.  If you are a Florida resident, you can purchase the “Disney Dining Experience” membership card.  For an annual fee, you can save 20% at Disney’s restaurants for a party of up to ten guests, and get free admission to Pleasure Island.  Also included is free valet parking at Disney World hotels.  Visit the Florida residents’ section on the Walt Disney World web site.

c.  If you want the Disney dining experience at a nice restaurant, but want to limit your cost, try dining out at lunch, when prices are less.

d.  Try to avoid the “Character” theme dinner shows.  They are quite expensive, and with a little planning your kids will be able to see plenty of characters for free during your stay.

e.  If possible, eat your major meals outside the theme parks.  There are generally many restaurants available, with many of them nicer, and for a lower price.

f.   If you drink a lot of non-water beverages and are staying at Disney hotels, consider buying the freely refillable theme mugs.  Drink as much as you want for one fixed price.

4.     Another expense of visiting theme parks is souvenirs, as discussed above.  However, if you are going to Disney World, make sure you visit Downtown Disney before you make those purchases.  There are lots of shops, including Mickey’s Mart, where all the “stuff” is ten dollars and under.  Your kids will have a good time and you will probably save some money.

5.     If you want some help in planning your Disney World visit, make sure to go to the Disney World web site and choose “My Vacation Planner.”  You can input information about your family and interests and the people at Disney will send you a customized map of each theme park with attractions of interest, restaurants and other facilities.

6.     And make sure you take advantage of some of the free sights and activities at Disney World including:

a.  The Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electrical Water Pageant.

b.  Tours of the Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge, and the Garden Tour at the Yacht & Beach Club Resort.

c.  Hike the nature trails at Fort Wilderness and visit the petting farm.

d.  Take a boat ride from Dixie Landings to Downtown Disney.

e.  Enjoy the campfire, singing and movie that is free to Disney World resort guests at Fort Wilderness.
